From the earliest of times, people acknowledged that there are invisible forces affecting us all. The extremely ancient study of astrology has long been a viable method to comprehend and interpret these mysterious influences.
In ancient times, it was the knowledge of the occult sciences, and specifically of astrology, that created classes in cultures; creating wizards, kings and prophets out of commoners. This very special knowledge seemed like magic to those who did not understand it or were not initiated into it’s mysteries. And most certainly, it was magic. For magic is merely hidden knowledge.
What would have seemed like “magic” two hundred years ago, for example, radio, television and even flying, is today part of our common knowledge. Thus, what seems like magic today, will ultimately become part of our common knowledge in the future.
What is astrology?
Astrology is simply… a science of celestial observation. In fact, the knowledge we have of astrology today is not from some mystical source, but rather is the result of thousands of astute astrologers making millions of calculations and observations of the heavens over the course of thousands of years. It is truly a profound gift from our ancestors. One which we should honor and respect.
Unlike the astrology that we read in newspapers about our “Sun Sign”, taking an astrology class or visiting a professional astrologer more specifically includes an understanding of the position of all the planets and their influences at the time of birth. This is done through the use of what is called the natal chart. With this chart, interpretation is tailored to the individual and becomes far more specific than just the Sun Sign interpretations. It’s vital to understand that each planet in our solar system brings it’s own unique influence to the personality and life experience.
Many have called the natal chart a blueprint or map of the lifetime. This is a useful description for something which provides a lifetime of guidance, helping us better prepare or even avoid the challenges that await us. In a sense, astrology can empower you to actively “co-create” your future.
Just as you wouldn’t likely wear shorts outside in the middle of a snow storm, astrology provides knowledge of life’s “weather patterns” allowing us to better prepare for our own “personal storms.”
Astrology Beyond The Sun Sign
We all have a pretty fair understanding of the Sun’s movement and the seasonal weather cycles it creates. Winter is cold, Spring is warm, Summer is hot and Fall is cool. The concept of the changing seasons is something we take for granted. Indeed, it’s practically engrained in our DNA, and yet, this too was an ancient concept that had to be learned by our ancestors and gratefully handed down to us.
We can easily confirm this knowledge because we get validation every year with our own senses. The Moon has a similar influence with it’s monthly cycle and it’s effect on tides, planting, fishing and even our emotions.
So we ask; if the Sun and Moon can have a visibly significant effect on our lives, then what about the other planets?
Yes, these too influence our lives, though we don’t typically “see” the patterns or cycles of their influence unless it is specifically pointed out to us. Bringing awareness to these “invisible” energies” is essentially the duty and task of any astrologer; to unmask the “invisible” influences of all the planets relative to our personal natal chart. In other words, how the planets will influence you specifically.
Of course, the ideal situation is to become your own astrologer and it is highly recommended that anyone remotely interested in astrology, take the time to become more aquainted with this most intriguing and rewarding subject.
Most beginning astrology students come to astrology after an encounter with it which gives them a glimpse at a pattern in their lives. This is usually followed by a revelation as well as insights full of wonder and amazement.
Learn The Basics
Vision Quest is proud to be offering a comprehensive 5 week beginning course in astrology on March 26 at 8:00 pm (leading to certification) with instructor Rocky Berlier. This beginning course provides a solid foundation and thorough grounding in the subject of astrology and it has launched the professional careers of many astrologers in both Arizona and California.
Rocky is a 27 year professional astrologer and a State Board Certified Behavioral Therapist as well as the co-owner/co-founder and CEO of Vision Quest Metaphysical Bookstore and Learning Center. He is an astrological writer/contributor and an active member of numerous national and international astrological organizations.
Rocky has spent several years on the executive board of the Arizona Society of Astrologers (ASA) in the positions of newsletter editor, vice president, president (1998-1999) and in an advisory role as past president. He has spoken at United Astrology Congress (UAC 1995) as part of Marion March’s Master Panel (author of The Only Way To Learn Astrology Series) on chart interpretation, and has served on a panel of astrological experts as well as given well received lectures and workshops for the ASA.
He has written articles for national astrological publications such as the NCGR Memberletter and Aspects magazine. He has been a featured astrological columnist for several high-end local and national magazines including TRUMP Style, Profit, and CityAZ magazine.
